Whale (high-spending buyer)
Also called: Big spender, Top buyer
Definition
A whale is a buyer who spends far more than the typical customer, often enough that a single whale changes the outcome of a show. In live selling the term covers buyers known to drop hundreds or thousands across a category's rooms.
Because live rooms are public, whales are recognisable across sellers: the same handles win the big auctions in many rooms. Knowing a whale has entered your room changes what you put up next, which is why competitor-tracking tools alert hosts the moment a known high spender arrives. Treating whales well, by greeting them, holding items and shipping carefully, is retention work with outsized returns.
