Dead air

Definition

Dead air is time in a live show when nothing is for sale and nothing is happening: no auction running, no pinned item, the host off camera or silent. Viewers leave during dead air faster than at any other point.

Dead air is usually logistical: finding the next item, fixing a label printer, reading a dispute in chat. Hosts cover it with a buy-it-now pinned, a co-host, or a running giveaway. The cost is measurable: viewers who leave rarely return to the same show.
