Auction pacing
Definition
Auction pacing is the rhythm of items offered and sold over a show: how many auctions per hour, how long each runs, and how quickly bids arrive within each one. Good pacing keeps the room bidding; poor pacing lets it drift.
Pacing is set by the host and read by the room. Too fast and buyers miss items; too slow and they open another stream. The most useful read is bids per minute inside the current auction compared with the show's earlier auctions at similar prices: when that falls, the room is cooling even if the sale still closes.
