Sudden death auction

Definition

A sudden death auction is a live auction that ends the instant a bid is placed after the timer has run out, rather than extending the clock. It rewards speed and is used to clear items fast.

Standard live auctions reset the countdown when a late bid arrives. Sudden death removes that: once the timer expires, the next bid wins immediately. Hosts use it for low-value items or to speed up a show that is running long, and buyers either love the adrenaline or avoid it.
